“…our very idea of which work qualifies as good and worthy is influenced by our
culture’s notion of who is worthy, and who is worth listening to.” *
-Camille Rankine

“Change requires intent and effort. It really is that simple.” **
-Roxane Gay

Editing and designing Nat. Brut is not only about making a beautiful, inclusive magazine; it’s also about building momentum toward something better. Our efforts are part of a much larger movement to dismantle the exclusionary cis-het-white-able-male-centered culture that shapes mainstream art, literature, and comics publishing. Part of what makes these efforts so rewarding is discovering and supporting the rich community of other incredible people, publications, and organizations that are working toward these same ends.

I agree with Roxane Gay when she says that change is simple. But she’s also right when she says it takes effort. Getting change right is, as Camille Rankine says, an “asymptotic effort that must be ongoing.” At Nat. Brut, we’re always trying to do better, and this issue represents a milestone in our own ongoing efforts.

In putting Issue Six together, I’ve been lucky enough to have worked with some of the kindest, most talented writers and artists I’ve ever come across. I’ve fallen in love with their work, and I hope you do as well.
Yours,

Kayla E.
