If you already know that we've been holding free Open Submissions during the months of May and November, then you may have noticed that this category is missing from our Submittable page this month.
Let us explain!
In lieu of a free Open Submission period this November, we're holding free submissions for Senior Editor Yanyi's Queer/Trans/Asian Folio through the end of the year. Expedited Submissions will remain open through November 30, though, and we implore those of you who are unable to pay the $4 fee to contact us directly at [email protected] (we understand the struggle!). All Expedited and Open Submissions will be closed from December 1, 2016 until February 1, 2017.
While we feel it's important to offer at least one free, open-to-all submission window for each biannual collection of content we publish, we've decided to give our beloved staff a break! Our readers and board editors have all been volunteering their time without pause (and without pay!) for all but a year, and this two-month break will allow our staff to re-group with a much-deserved vacation from their Nat. Brut labors of love.
For transparency's sake, we feel it's important to explain a bit about the costs involved in our submission process. In order to make submitting and receiving submissions as easy as possible for both submitters and our staff, respectively, we use Submittable, which is a wonderful, user-friendly platform! However, in order to receive submissions without charging a fee, we have to pay $34 per month. For an independent magazine operating on a shoestring budget, two free submission months add up quickly when combined with all of our other operating costs. To all the talented and generous creators who are kind enough to pay our small Expedited fee ten months out of the year, you play a large part in keeping Nat. Brut thriving! Because of you, we're able to give our staff some precious time off during the holidays and have enough wiggle room to allow for a full two-month free submission window for Yanyi's phenomenal folio (which will be the first of many exciting special-edited folios to come!). We can't thank you enough!
And to all the talented and gracious creators whose work we're privileged enough to receive during our Open Submission months, fear not! Moving forward, we'll be holding free submissions during March and September. To catch up on our updated guidelines, take a look at our Submittable page, and feel free to get in touch with any questions or concerns at [email protected].
In the meantime, we'll be cooking up a stellar batch of fiction, poetry, essays, comics, and art to serve you all in February of 2017! As always, thank you for reading, looking, watching, and feeling with us, and for working together with us to foster mindful, inclusive art and literary publishing!
